Questions patients ask
Why do I need a patch test before laser hair removal?
A patch test shows how your skin reacts to the settings that will be used before a whole area is treated. It also lets the clinic look at your skin type and hair colour, which decide whether laser will work for you and which kind of machine suits you. Clinics usually ask you to wait a while between the test and the first full session.
Does laser hair removal work on dark skin or on fair hair?
The laser aims at the pigment in the hair, so dark hair responds best, and fair, grey, white and red hair often respond poorly. Darker skin can be treated with the right type of laser and settings, often an Nd:YAG laser, so ask which machine the clinic uses and how often it treats skin like yours.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually several, a few weeks apart, because the laser only reaches hairs while they are growing. The number depends on the area, your hair and your skin, and you may need the odd top-up later. If a course is paid up front, ask what happens to sessions you do not use.
What should I avoid before a session?
Shave the area beforehand, but do not wax, pluck or use hair removal cream in the weeks before, because the laser needs the root to be there. Stay out of the sun and avoid fake tan, since tanned skin raises the risk of burns and marks. Tell the clinic about any medicines you take, as some make the skin more sensitive to light.
